jueves 6 de noviembre de 2003

Spain, November 6, 03

Anfaco, the Spanish National Association of Canned Fish and Shellfish Producers will today participate in the General Assembly of Interatún, the Spanish Interprofesional Tuna Organization that will analyze the situation of the Spanish tuna industry.

During the assembly, which will take place in Madrid, Spain, today November 6th in Madrid, Spain, the participants will analyze the Spanish tuna transformation industry and tuna fleet. Other issues to be discussed are those of direct great importance to the tuna industry, such as the tariff contingent for the canned tuna imports from Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia, as well as the development of the Plan of Work of Interatún for
2003 and Campaign of Promotion of Tuna 2003 together with FROM and proposals for 2004, among other topics.

Interatún is the first inter-professional organization constituted and recognized formally by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Feeding (MAP) within the scope of the fishing sector. Thus, its function is centered in representing and defending the interests of the industrial tuna fishing sector from the point of view of the different subsectors which are related to the tuna industry; based on the fact that tuna is one of the most important species for the fishing and transformation industry at a world-wide level.

Within the communitarian framework and at the initiative of the European Commission, inter-professional organizations are being created within the various EU agricultural and fishing sectors to stimulate this development of future policies and strategies for catching, production and commercialization within the various agricultural and fishing sectors of the EU.

Therefore, it is important that Anfaco members and Interatún members coordinate their policies towards important tuna issues.
